1. 作复数的集体名词：

以下集体名词：police，people，cattle，poultry等等，通常作复数，因此谓语动词用复数。

The people here are really happy. 这儿的人真的很快乐。

The vermin on the leaves are hard to get rid of. 叶子上的昆虫很难清除。

2. 作单数的集体名词：

像equipment, furniture, merchandise, machinery等等，常被看做是不可数名词，因此其后的谓语动词用单数形式。

The equipment in our lab is perfect. 我们实验室的设备完美完美至极。

The modern furniture is very cheap here. 这儿的现代式家具非常便宜。

3. 可单可复的集体名词：

英语中，还有一些集体名词，既可以作单数，也可以作复数。如audience, committee, class, crew, family, government, public等。这些集体名词，表示一个整体时，谓语动词为单数；如果表示集体的组成成员，则谓语动词用复数。

His audience consists mainly of young people. 他的观众主要是由年轻人构成。

The audience were clapping for over ten minutes. 观众们的掌声响了十多分钟。
